Before the final show in 2017, the tribal aunts prayed for the visiting artists: “Wish you complete the works that will touch others, and which will touch you too. And also hope you have learnt and will learn a lot in this journey.” (Extracted from 2017 Resident Artist Dorothy Wong Ka Chung’s Facebook)
Tree Tree Tree Person – Taroko Arts Residency Project ( I & II ) – the curatorial project continues the reflection and introspection within the possibility of Art as interaction with Nature. In 2018, the residency acts more like a footnote to the implemented projects in the last two years. There is no dogmatic curatorial conception, only invitation. The residency invites eight former artists-in-residence to come back to the mountains to continue their thinking and creating for one more month, invites the Taroko people who have cooperated with us for two years, invites the tribal church friends at the foot of the hill, invites Taroko tribal people who have left the mountain to work for their living, and also invites people who want to learn about some stories that come from the mountains. Let us take a mountain road together again this summer.

To the mountain standing in the mist: I wish with all my heart that more people can understand your beauty and value

(deutsch weiter unten)

“ima hangan su” (“what is your name” in Truku) started on the TreeTreeTree Person residency in Taiwan in 2017 alongside the community of indigenous people called Truku.

In the Truku community the complexity of the indigenous struggle is obvious. In the early 70s, the Taiwanese government forced the Truku to relocate from their mountain homeland due to the instalment of a National Park. They now live at the foot of that same mountain, living a precarious existence, only being granted a commercialised folklore visibility which mainly serves tourism.

In the presentation, we will show a video/ sound installation, which deals with questions of home and displacement. After that, we will give a short input talk about our experience of working within the Truku community, focusing on questions of self-positioning, solidarity in a post-colonial setting, and the role and possibilities of artistic work in the context of that community. The talk will be followed by an open discussion.

o!sland is a collective of three artists bringing together different cultural and artistic backgrounds : media artist Dorothy Wong Ka Chung from Hong Kong, choreographer Eva Lin Yingchi from China, and composer/sound artist Benjamin Ryser from Switzerland. The collective develops installations, performances and video works in which social and political contexts are negotiated through the perspective of personal experience.
